A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love. Set like its predecessor in war-torn Afghanistan, it is the heroic plight of two women of different generations married to the same savagely abusive male. Born out of wedlock, Mariam was forced to marry 40-year-old Rasheed when she was only 15. Then, 18 years later, her still childless husband angrily takes an even younger wife. Hosseini renders the story of Mariam and  Laila with detail and compassion. Ultimately, their resistance is from the very core of their being. A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

This story of Amir, the privileged young narrator, is a tale of both fierce cruelty and fierce love. Coming of age in Afghanistan, Amir enjoys the last peaceful days in his country until the invasion by Russian forces. Political turmoil shapes his life, as does his own personal agony. Travel with Amir through Afghanistan, to Pakistan as he flees his homeland, and finally to America, where he starts a new life. And return with him to Afghanistan, where he comes to terms with the present and faces his past. While at times raw and painful to read, this story is gripping and rewarding to the very end.
